Programme Aim
This award educates learners in protecting horticultural plants & crops from the affects of weeds, pests, diseases and disorders and to also select the appropriate control measures. Learners upon completion can competently review the affects, reproduction, spread and control of weeds and apply pesticides with a knapsack sprayer in accordance with recommended safe practice. Participants will have developed these skills ensuring that safe working practices are met when in use of equipment, chemical and other materials meeting all health and safety requirements

Specific Entry/Access and Exemptions Requirements
A learner seeking entry to a programme leading to awards at level 5 does not need a previous formal qualification. HCT would highly recommend that learners have achieved some certification at Level 4 or have relevant work/life experience.

Programme Content
Implement procedures to create and maintain a safe working environment including safety instructions regarding lifting, carrying and handling plants, tools and equipment. Describe Pest and Disease control measures appropriate to specific situations including cultural, chemical, bio-logical and integrated control methods and legislative control practices including notifiable pests and diseases. Describes the range, formulations and uses of pesticides in horticulture. Have a keen understanding of the characteristics of disease causing agents of non-pathogenic plant disorders
